The Mount Evans Via Ferrata is one of AVA’s newer extreme adventures, sitting at the base of a beautiful 14,000+ foot peak in the Colorado Rockies. A Via Ferrata, which means “iron way” in Italian, is a method of mountaineering & rock climbing that’s been used in Europe for centuries. Via Ferrata courses use a combination of ladders, rungs, rails, cables and bridges to aid in moving across and up a cliff face. The Iron Way in Idaho Springs is an assisted rock climbing guided tour where guests clip into cables that run along the side of a cliff. They then move along a designated path of iron rungs and bridges to move across, and along the way, they will be required to clip in and out of the cable to progress through the course. This is made possible through an advanced internal locking system in the carabiners. Each guest will have 2 carabiners connected to bungee-style lanyards on their harness. The internal locking system makes it impossible to clip out of both at the same time, ensuring that climbers are connected to the cable of the course at all times.

Voted the Best Zipline Tour in the Rockies last year, the Cliffside Zipline in Idaho Springs is just 30 minutes from Denver or 1 hour from Summit County, Boulder or Winter Park. You’ll find big mountain views for miles, a beautiful short hike, and exciting drops with zooming lines through the treetops. You’ll start at our Idaho Springs Outpost, where you’ll check in, receive your zipline gear and get the zipline safety rundown. We then drive you most of the way up the mountainside of our 9-acre property. You’ll get to the very top with a 10-minute hike to platform #1. All of our platforms – #1 through #6 – are built into natural cliffs and treetops. We are not the zipline course right on the interstate! Although our Outpost is conveniently just 1/4 mile from I-70, you feel a world away with the undeveloped mountain forest and big drops where our zipline tours take place.
The hike to Big Meadows begins from the Green Mountain Trailhead, located 2.5 miles north of the Grand Lake Entrance. From the parking area the Green Mountain Trail begins climbing through a lush conifer forest. The climb is steady and moderate, but graduates to more gentle grades after the first half-mile, with a few short steeper inclines thrown in every now and then. As the trail levels out you’ll begin passing a couple of small meadows along the way. Keep an eye out for moose and elk foraging in these fields as you pass near them. You should note that the edge of the meadow can be a bit marshy, especially in the spring. Also, only two-tenths of a mile up the trail are the remnants of an old homesteader’s cabin from the early 1900s. Big Meadows is surrounded by numerous 12,000 ft. plus peaks. After Big Meadows, hikers will continue down Tonahutu Trail, for more amazing views
